PATA reports on tourism market trends and insights

Jan 27, 2012 BANGKOK, Thailand – Preliminary results released today by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) show a collective increase of 6 percent year-on-year for international arrivals into Asia/Pacific destinations during each of the months of October and November 2011. For the first 11 months of the year, South Asia was the star growth performer, followed by Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the Pacific, all of which saw tourism demand improve, albeit at different rates of growth. This momentum is expected to continue for the rest of the year and paves the way for an expected full-year arrivals gain of 5-6 percent in 2011, above the global growth figure of 4 percent. Volvo Ocean Race : Full of enjoyment and over all too soon

Team Sanya is nearing the home stretch with only the frustration of testing beating conditions standing between them and the Leg 2 Stage 1 finish at the safe haven in the Indian Ocean. The crew clocked up speeds in excess of 20 knots overnight before hitting the head winds early on Tuesday morning. At 1000 UTC they were cruising at 12 knots of boat speed in a northerly breeze of the same measurement. Media Crew Member Andres Soriano said the overnight racing was fun, full of enjoyment and over all too soon. We exited the trades at around 1700 and shot forward ticking off the miles at an average of 15 knots, ploughing through warm waves and then being rinsed off by cool short rain squalls that brought a few hours of 20 … Read entire article »

More gambling not the answer to money woes

In Gov. Steve Beshears State of the Commonwealth address Jan. 4, he called for the state legislators to introduce and approve a bill to allow voters to decide if they want casino type gambling in this state. I say to you, Expanding gambling is not the answer to Kentuckys financial problems. In an article by Chuck Stinnett this past Sunday, he reported how the Spectrum Gaming Group has estimated that a casino at Ellis Park would bring the equivalent of jobs for 552 full-time employees and 192 construction workers jobs. Gaming is just a more politically acceptable word for gambling. I have no way of checking it out, but I hesitate to trust the figures set forth in a study done by the gambling industry. Those kinds of studies done by the … Read entire article »

Sherdog Pick’Em Trends: UFC on Fox 2

If the participants in the Sherdog.com MMA Pick’Em fantasy game are to be believed, then Rashad Evans will most definitely have his day against Jon Jones. A solid 76 percent of players have sided with Evans against Phil Davis in the UFC on Fox 2 main event on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago. Evans beat Forrest Griffin for the light heavyweight championship in 2008 but lost the belt in his first defense to Lyoto Machida at UFC 98. Since then, “Suga” has picked up wins over Thiago Silva, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Tito Ortiz. Twice tabbed as the division’s No. 1 contender, injuries have halted the Imperial Athletics representative’s title hopes until now, as a victory over Davis would give Evans his long-awaited showdown with Jones, the current … Read entire article »

Online gambling: a casino in every home

The editors of the Times have it right. The legislators in our state who would be supporters of online gambling and expanding lottery sales options need to do their homework before the horse is out of the barn, so to speak. According to many public opinion polls, two out of three Americans oppose legalizing online gambling. Should they? I think it would be wise to consider the following in arriving at an answer: Online gambling is like putting a casino in every home that has a computer. Without getting out of your pajamas and robes, you can sit for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You might ask, Who would do that? The answer is the addicted, pathological gambler would do that and often does. Have no doubt … Read entire article »
