Alabama Adventure to convert to water-only theme park
BESSEMER, AL (WSFA) – Alabama Adventure announced Thursday the park will convert from a dual amusement and water park to a water park only. New owners for the park are buying Alabama Adventures for the second time and plan to rename the park Splash Adventures. Bessemer Mayor Ken Gulley thanked the new owners for buying the park again. The new owners, General Attractions, used to be Southland Entertainment and owned the park from 2003 until 2008. They said during that time, around 70 percent of the visitors to Alabama Adventures went to the water park in addition to the amusement park or visited just the water park. The owners bought the park in January 2012 and decided to turn their focus to the water park section. The owners said today they plan to … Read entire article »

Shorter Allagash adventures worthwhile
Would you like to canoe the Allagash Wilderness Waterway? If your answer to this question is yes, but you don’t have the time to spend an entire week canoeing from Chamberlain Lake to Allagash Village, I want you to know that you have other options. There are several opportunities for shorter Allagash adventures without canoeing the entire 92-mile-long waterway. One of my personal favorites is the Allagash Lake to Chamberlain Bridge trip. This route takes you through the wildest section of the waterway. One of the nice things about this trip is that if you are accessing the waterway from the south or east, you will be driving right past your takeout location on your way to Allagash Lake. The closest vehicle access point to Allagash Lake is actually at Johnson Pond, … Read entire article »

Blu-ray review: ‘The Adventures of Tintin’
Director Steven Spielberg discovered venerable comic-book hero Tintin in 1981 when French reviewers likened his Indiana Jones to the comic-book hero. So, its wonderfully appropriate that the three-time Oscar winner channels the globe-trotting, Saturday-matinee spirit of Indy with “The Adventures of Tintin,” a rip-roaring family film that takes full advantage of motion-capture technology. For American audiences, the beautifully rendered action movie offers a stellar introduction to Tintin (Jamie Bell), the intrepid young journalist who stars in the pioneering comic books created by Herge. The film — based on “Tintin” books — begins with a loving homage to the late Belgian artist/writer, with an animated version of Herge sketching a caricature of Tintin at an outdoor market, where the flame-haired lad buys a model ship at a bargain. … Read entire article »

The further adventures of Magic Cyclops (video edition)
In case youve been dying to know what everyones favorite air guitarist, novelty rocker, and American Idol contestant Magic Cylops has been up to lately, but were far too lazy to Google or check his Facebook page, we have an update. Actually, Illegal Petes has the update. Were just going to embed it for you and make a few comments about it. Ahem. Anyway, Cyclops filmed a series of video diaries during his stint at SXSW, documenting his adventures at the nations biggest music-industry circle jerk. In Vol. 1 he bitches about old punks, the difficulty of finding a taxi, and eating healthy food. Vol. 2 sees him finding a new favorite restaurant, facing off with a bro-tastic heckler, and looking for a massagge (sic) with a sad ending. The … Read entire article »

Book Review: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
This week, I entreat you to take a trip down the rabbit hole and join a very famous little girl in Lewis Carroll’s classic, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. If you’ve seen the 1951 Disney classic, you have some idea of what you’d be getting yourself into. If not, here is an idea of what to expect. Think of a dream, any dream you have ever had. When you’re having it, everything seems real and right. When you wake up and try to explain it to someone though, you begin to see how peculiar it really was. The timeline seems off. Places aren’t like they should be. Characters keep popping in an out sometimes for no reason at all. It’s complete madness… when you think about it. In Alices Adventures in Wonderland, the scenery changes in … Read entire article »
